These things just snuck up on me
![]()
There are a few things that seemed to have snuck up on me, that Sweets is supposed to be able to do.
Swim.
Read.
Tie her shoes.
Of course, everyone says she doesn’t have to be proficient at these things, just starting to learn them, “but yes, now that you ask, my kid has been doing these things since birth.” Interesting. It’s like the baby play dates all over again. “She’s how old and she only has 10 words? She only uses 1 fork at meals? Where is the shrimp fork? She can’t pole vault yet?”
My husband reminds me that she is younger than the rest of the kids in her class. Which is true, but I forget that a lot. She doesn’t seem younger to me. In some ways she seems older.
So I guess we’ll get cracking on all those Things She Needs To Know over the summer. But I’ve decided not to stress about it. You just can’t make a kid do something they aren’t ready for.
